Back to school is in full swing so we thought it’s a good time to chat about why walking to school with your muddy pups is a wonderful idea.
Physical activity is a brilliant way to start your morning strong. As Muddy Mums, we like mixing duty with pleasure and walking our young explorers to school is both fun and beneficial for the whole family. It’s also a fantastic way for you and your children to stay healthy, active and happy. Read on to find out why.
1) It’s healthy
Walking to school is a great form of exercise for you and your children. We all know that children don’t get enough exercise nowadays – children and young people aged 5-18 should do at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Sadly, only 20% of children are currently meeting this recommendation. Good news – you can easily avoid this negative trend by switching to active commuting. Walking to school helps lower your family’s BMI, reduces risk of obesity, heart disease and obesity and it generally does wonders for your young adventurer’s health.
2) It’s fun
Walking is much more fun for your children than being driven to school every day. They will spot lots of interesting things on their way to school and will get more familiar with their neighbourhood. Plus, what’s better than some puddle splashing on a rainy day before a long day of classes?
3) It’s good for the planet
Walking to school is not only great for you, but also for the planet. Swapping driving for walking is a perfect way to reduce CO2 emissions. Walking to school even once or twice a week already makes a difference.
4) It’s relaxing and helps your children learn
Walking is wonderful for mental health. It reduces stress and helps your children start the day with a calm mind. If you think your young explorers have too much screen time, walking to school is a fantastic idea as it means ditching technology at least for a little while. These precious moments spent away from technology are much needed and will surely become your family morning ritual. Moreover, physical activity helps your children learn and boosts their performance in class. After a good walk, your children will arrive to school refreshed and happy.
5) Family time
Some quality time spent with your children on the way to school is a great start to the day. Walking your children to school will help you focus only on them and help you feel closer as a family.
6) No more getting stuck in traffic
Nothing’s more stressful than getting stuck in traffic, especially when you’re in a rush in the morning. Swap your car for a pair of comfortable shoes and enjoy your morning walk.
7) No more hunting for a parking space
No more driving means no more hunting for a parking space – what a relief! A big part of the morning rush hour traffic is made up of people driving their children to school.
8) It’s for everyone
It’s never too early or too late to start walking to school. It’s also for everyone – no special or expensive equipment is needed. A pair of good, comfortable shoes and a waterproof jacket and wellies in case of a sudden rain are enough.
9) It’s character-building
Walking to school make your children feel more independent and in control, especially if they walk alone. It teaches them basic navigational skills and helps them feel more confident. Before allowing your children to walk to school on their own, make sure they’re ready and have all the required road safety skills.
10) It’s good for your wallet
Driving less is a great way to save money on petrol – up to £300 a year! Another good reason to start walking to school.
