Learning Objectives

Measurement:

- Choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure length/ height in any direction (m/cm); mass (kg/g); temperature (°C); capacity (litres/ml) to the nearest appropriate unit, using rulers, scales, thermometers and measuring vessels

- Compare and order lengths, mass, volume/ capacity and record the results using >, < and =

Resources

A piece of card and paper for each child, clipboard, pencils, scissors, chalk, rulers, masking or duct tape.

Introduction

- The children need to take off their shoes and draw around one foot on to a piece of card. The foot print needs to be cut out, so a footprint template remains. Offer support if needed for the cutting out.

- Measure the foot and record the size in cm on their paper.

- Take the children around the school grounds looking for grassy areas that have a good number of daisies. Select at least 3 areas, and together mark the area with tape. Give each area a number.

Activity

- Ask the children to draw three boxes (or footprints!) on to their paper. Ask the children to place their footprint over each of the marked area, and to count how many daisies each area has within the footprint. Record the results on their paper.

- Once the daisies have been counted and recorded, model the signs < and >. Review the childrens results together, and see who has the top two largest number. On a wall or on the playground, ask the children which of the numbers is more than, and less than, and use the chalk to record on the wall using the symbols.

- Repeat this, using the two largest and two smallest foot measurements.

- Repeat for the two smallest numbers in the group and ask the children to then review their results of their daisy count, and arrange their results using the > and < symbols, and to record on their paper.
