Top 10 Activities for a Great Bank Holiday Weekend

Back to school is fast approaching and your children will be soon getting ready for the new school year. Luckily, there is one more long weekend to enjoy with the family before the new term kicks off.

We have rounded up 10 fun outdoor activities to enjoy with your children before summer is over. Have a lovely Bank Holiday weekend!

1) Head to the beach

This is probably the last opportunity to enjoy a trip to the beach before summer ends so make sure to tick it off your list! Head to the nearest beach and spend a lovely day outdoors with your children. Build a sandcastle, listen to the sound of waves and let your little explorers run free. Looking for the best beach in the UK? We’ve rounded them up here.

2) Stargaze

Fancy a night-time family adventure? Wrap up warm and go for a walk to the nearest woods or stay in your back garden and simply stare at the sky. Ask your children to spot as many constellations as they can, they can even use binoculars to make their task easier. Check out our top tips for stargazing with children here.

3) Have a picnic in the park

We believe that life is tastier outdoors so a family picnic in the park is a great idea! Enjoying a meal outside is super fun and we’re sure your children will love it. Prepare some sandwiches or salads and catch the last rays of summer before school kicks into full swing.

4) Go on a family adventure

Go on a family-friendly hike to catch some fresh air and unwind. Family walks are a brilliant idea as they’re easy to organise and really good for you and your family. We’re truly spoilt for choice in the UK – whether you prefer an easy walking route or a more challenging one, you won’t have to look to far. Here is our list of top 10 family-friendly walks in the UK.

5) Try fruit-picking

Try fruit foraging with your children and pick your own yummy fruit before summer is over! Have a look at our favourite places to pick your own fresh and delicious goodies and get your fair share of vitamins.

6) Go camping

Haven’t tried camping yet? Make sure to sleep under the stars at least once before it’s time to go back to school. If going camping is too much of a hassle, pitch a tent in your back garden and pretend you’re on an outdoor adventure.

7) Fly a kite

No plans for the long weekend? Find the ultimate kite flying hotspot in your area and get ready to launch your kite.

8) Do some gardening

Nothing is more relaxing than gardening and it has loads of benefits, too! It’s a great way to teach your children about nature, strengthen their connection to food and encourage them to spend more time outdoors. If you have a chance, try gardening and let your explorers dig in muddy soil this weekend.

9) Go on a scavenger hunt

Organise an exciting scavenger hunt for your bold explorers to keep them entertained. You can go scavenging pretty much anywhere you like, whether you’re on the beach, in the city or in your back garden. Put together a list of items for the children to find and let the competition begin! Looking for ideas? Have a look at our brilliant printable spotting sheets.

10) Play outdoor games

Everyone loves outdoor games and they’re great for entertaining the little ones even if you have nothing exciting planned for the Bank Holiday weekend. All you need is a team of keen players and your back garden (or the nearest outdoor space). Here’s some of our favourites to get you started.
