To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the brilliant children's book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, we’ve looked all around the UK to find the best muddy family walks in the most beautiful places.

What’s better than a muddy family walk? It’s the perfect opportunity to get the whole family together, plus walking in nature is perfect for those who crave nature and fresh air.

1) Old Sarum, Wiltshire

 Built by William the Conqueror in 1086, Old Sarum is one of the first Norman castles in England. It’s also the perfect place for a family walk whatever the weather. Take one of the many footpaths and enjoy the great view over Salisbury and the countryside. There’s no café on site, but there are vending machines selling hot drinks and snacks if you and your gang need an afternoon pick-me-up.

2) Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales

The Brecon Beacons National Park offers lots of attractions for you and your young hikers. There are so many different walks to choose from. Wrap up warm, pack a waterproof jacket (just in case) and enjoy a magical walk with your brave explorers. Depending on the weather, there are plenty of things to do in the park. There are also lots of pubs in the Brecon Beacons where you can enjoy roaring fire when it’s chilly outside.

3) Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden, North Yorkshire

 Discover the breathtaking landscapes of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden with your family this spring. This five-mile trail takes you through the deer park and elegant Georgian water garden. The route offers views of Ripon, the distant North York Moors and the impressive ruins of Fountains Abbey.

4) Morden Hall Park, London

Spring is a great time to visit Morden Hall Park in South London. Discover the wetland wildlife, watch out for the lovely plants in the arboretum, admire the wonderful woodland and have a warming cuppa in the café to end your visit in style. 

5) Mamhead Sensory Trail, Cornwall

This easy, fully surfaced, pushchair-friendly trail is perfect even for the smallest hikers. There are picnic tables along the walk, so you can have a little pick-me-up anytime. Give the trail a go and discover one of the most beautiful views in Devon. For breathtaking views over Exeter and the estuary, try the three-mile Haldon Obelisk route. 

6) Tegg’s Nose Country Park, Cheshire

Tegg’s Nose is located on the western edge of the Peak District National Park and is great for a family adventure. Head to Tegg’s Nose park to enjoy stunning views over the Cheshire Plain. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to see Liverpool’s cathedrals and Welsh hills beyond on a clear day.

7) Ham House and Garden, Surrey

 Walk from Richmond Station to Ham House and Garden. This wonderful four-and-a-half-mile circular route leads you from Richmond town centre to a beautiful rural riverside walk along the Thames Path. A day out at Ham House is great fun for all the family and there are lots of things to enjoy, from family friendly events to exploring the beautiful gardens.

8) Stowe, Buckinghamshire

Enjoy a muddy, family walk around the lakes - spot wildlife and beautiful temples. Paths through the wooded area has allow pushchair access, so you can visit Stowe even with your youngest explorers.

9) Sutherland's Grove, West Argyll, Scotland

Enjoy the super easy Giant Fir Trail, perfect for the whole family and for all abilities. The path is suitable for little legs and great even for the youngest adventurers. Walk through the towering Douglas firs and spot some massive trees reaching even 150 feet in height

10) Seven Sisters Country Park, East Sussex

 In the mood for a brilliant coastal adventure? Head to the Seven Sisters Country Park, great for a walk with young hikers. The chalk cliffs of The Seven Sisters are one of the UK’s most photographed stretches of coastline.
